Muscle strength and uric acid: links to earlier death faded after adjustment

Muscle strength with agePart of a story we are following · 3 articles · See every update
If you have heard that grip strength and uric acid can say something about how long you will live, here is the calmer version. A study of older adults found that weak muscle strength and high uric acid both looked linked to earlier death at first. Once the researchers took other health factors into account, those links faded.
That fading is useful to know. It suggests grip and uric acid may be signs of overall health, not single causes of anything. And muscle strength is something you can work on at any age.
How the study worked
Researchers looked back at the records of 910 people aged 60 or older seen at a university hospital between 2020 and 2024, and followed who died. The average age was 71, and 66.9% were women. The results were published Sept. 15, 2026, in Metabolic Syndrome and Related Disorders, and because it looked back at records from one hospital, it shows patterns, not cause and effect.
What they found
The team measured handgrip strength, which is how hard you can squeeze a device. They also measured muscle mass and uric acid in the blood, and sorted people into four groups by uric acid level.
At first glance, the picture looked worrying. People with weak grip were about twice as likely to die during the study (1.91 times). People in the highest uric acid group were also about twice as likely (1.86 times). Both weak grip and high uric acid went along with less healthy metabolic readings, such as those that track how the body handles sugar and fat.
Then came the part that matters most. After the researchers adjusted for other factors, both links faded. In plain words, the weak grip and the high uric acid were no longer standing out on their own as predictors of death.
There was one exception. When the researchers looked at men and women separately, high uric acid still stood out among women. Women with high uric acid were about three times as likely to die during the study (3.08 times). That does not mean uric acid caused it. It means doctors may want to pay closer attention to this number in older women.
What are grip strength and uric acid, anyway?
Grip strength is a quick, simple test. It reflects the strength of your muscles overall, not just your hands. Doctors often use it as a snapshot of how well the body is holding up.
Uric acid is a waste product your body makes. When levels run high, it can cause gout, a painful joint condition. It shows up on many routine blood tests, so there is a good chance your doctor already has your number.
What you can do today
You do not need a gym or any special gear to start building the strength this study measured. Grab a soft ball or a rolled-up towel and squeeze it hard for five seconds. Rest a moment, then repeat until you have done ten squeezes with each hand. It takes a couple of minutes, and you can do it right now with your coffee in the other hand.
Talk about it at home
In this study, scientists measured how hard older adults could squeeze a device, and also checked a waste substance in their blood. At first, weak squeezing and high levels of that substance seemed to go along with poorer health. But when the scientists took other things into account, those links mostly faded, a bit like finding that two puddles on the road were both there because it rained, not because one made the other.
Question for the table
Why do you think the scientists looked at so many other things about each person before deciding what the squeeze test really meant?

Questions and answers
- Does weak grip strength mean I will die sooner?
- No. Weak grip looked linked to earlier death at first, but the link faded once other health factors were counted.
- Why do doctors measure grip strength?
- It is a quick, simple test that reflects your overall muscle strength.
- Is high uric acid a concern for women?
- In this study, high uric acid still stood out among women after adjustment. It shows a pattern, not a cause, and your doctor can tell you what your number means.
- What is uric acid?
- It is a waste product your body makes. High levels can cause gout, and it is part of many routine blood tests.
