The LITMUS study, published Oct. 31, 2026, in The Lancet, compared 30 non-invasive tests against liver biopsy in 1590 adults with fatty liver disease. Multimarker panels did best, led by a protein panel for at-risk disease and advanced scarring.
In a placebo-controlled crossover trial of 15 people with fatty liver disease, 6 weeks of a drug that blocks the first step of fructose metabolism improved the liver's response to insulin and reduced liver fat, without changing body weight.
In older US adults with fatty liver disease, starting a GLP-1 drug was linked to lower risks of liver decompensation (hazard ratio 0.72) and death (0.55), but not of major heart events, with more of some side effects.
