Aesthetic treatments: what worksPart of a story we are following · 3 articles · See every update
If you have ever wondered about injections for the lines between your eyebrows but did not like the idea of living with the result for months, there is news. Among aesthetic treatments, a new kind of botulinum toxin starts working within hours and wears off in about three weeks.
In a large trial, most people who got it saw their frown lines clearly soften within a week. Almost no one who got a placebo did. Here is what that looked like.
How the study worked
This was a phase 3 trial, the last big testing stage before a product can be reviewed for approval. Adults with moderate-to-severe frown lines, some who had used toxins before and some who never had, were randomly assigned to get either the new toxin or a placebo, at a ratio of three to one. Neither the participants nor the doctors knew who got which. The results were published on Oct. 24, 2026, in Aesthetic Surgery Journal. The abstract does not say how many people took part, and the new toxin was compared with a placebo, not with the toxins already on the market.
What is a type E toxin?
Botulinum toxin injections are among the most popular cosmetic treatments for the “11” lines between the eyebrows, which doctors call glabellar lines. The usual products use botulinum toxin type A. They take a few days to work and last for months.
The new one is called trenibotulinumtoxinE, or trenibotE for short. It is a type E toxin, designed to work fast and fade quickly. In the trial, people received a dose of 700 U.
What they found
The bar for success was strict. At day 7, the frown line had to be rated none or mild when frowning as hard as possible, with at least a two-grade improvement. Both the doctor and the participant had to agree.
About 60% of the people who got the new toxin met that bar (60.0% exactly), compared with 0.6% of those who got the placebo.
The effect showed up quickly. Improvement began at hour 8, was strongest at day 7, and by day 21 the lines were back to moderate or severe.
People were happy with how it looked, too. Satisfaction with the treatment was higher in the toxin group at every check:
- Hour 8: 33.0% vs. 13.8% with placebo
- Hour 24: 59.2% vs. 17.3%
- Day 7: 77.6% vs. 5.1%
Satisfaction with a natural-looking result also started at hour 8 and peaked at day 7, at 78.5% with the toxin vs. 9.0% with placebo.
- Hour 8 Improvement begins
- Day 7 Peak effect
- Day 21 Lines return to moderate or severe
Most side effects were mild, not serious and not related to the treatment. The researchers described the overall balance of benefit and risk as favorable.
What does this mean for you?
The short life of this toxin is the point. Some people hold back from injections because they cannot be sure how they will look, and a result that lasts months feels like a big step. A treatment that fades in about three weeks could let you see the effect first. It could also suit someone who wants smoother skin for a particular event.
This product comes from a trial aimed at showing it works. It is not something you can ask for at the clinic today, but it shows where the choices are heading.
What you can do today
If you are curious about frown-line injections, write down three questions tonight for a licensed, trained provider: how long each option lasts, what side effects to expect, and what the alternatives are. Keep the list on your phone, so it is ready for the first appointment.
Talk about it at home
The new medicine in this study works like a quick sprinkle of rain instead of a long soaking storm. It is made to start working very soon and then fade away on its own after a few weeks. Scientists wanted to see if people really noticed the change, so they looked at many faces over time.
Question for the table
Why do you think the scientists gave some people a pretend treatment that did nothing, and why was it important that nobody knew who got which one?
