Long-term talk therapy works as depression treatment, 16 trials show

If you are weighing your options for depression treatment, here is good news: talk therapy that goes deep and lasts nine months or longer works. People who got it felt better than people in other groups, and the improvement generally held up after therapy ended.

That is the finding from a large review of sixteen trials. It means that taking your time with therapy is not a luxury. It is a proven way to feel better.

How the study worked

Researchers pooled the results of sixteen randomized trials with 1,992 people in total. Every trial tested long-term psychodynamic therapy, defined as at least nine months and at least 30 sessions. The review was published Sept. 23, 2026, in Depression and Anxiety. Most of the trials had some design weaknesses, and there were too few of them to say which kinds of patients benefit most, yet the main result held across all of them.

What they found

When therapy ended, people who had long-term psychodynamic therapy had clearly lower depression symptoms than people in the comparison groups. On the scale researchers use to compare studies, the improvement was 0.34. The review’s confidence in this result was rated high.

The therapy also did well against other real treatments, not just against doing nothing. In those head-to-head comparisons the improvement was 0.27, and confidence in the result was rated moderate.

The gains were generally still there when researchers checked in later.

The authors say these results support a strong recommendation for long-term psychodynamic therapy as a way to reduce depression symptoms.

What is psychodynamic therapy?

It is a type of talk therapy. You and a therapist explore how past experiences, relationships and patterns you may not fully notice shape how you feel today. Over many sessions, you start to see those patterns and change them.

In this review, the therapy ran at least nine months, and the trials included different groups of people and different styles of psychodynamic work.

Shorter, structured therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy have long had a lot of research behind them. This review adds solid support for the longer path, too. Several kinds of therapy help with depression, and the best one is often the one that fits your life and that you can stick with.

What you can do today

Good therapy runs on good material, and you can start gathering yours right now. Take a few minutes and write down three moments from this week when your mood changed. Next to each one, jot down what happened just before. Keep the note on your phone or in a notebook. If you ever start therapy, or already see someone, this list gives you a strong place to begin.

Talk about it at home

Some feelings have roots that go back a long way, like a tree whose roots are hidden under the ground. One kind of talk therapy takes its time to look at those roots, and scientists found that people who stuck with it felt better.
